ALICE IN WONDERLAND - THE MAD HATTER
"Mad as a Hatter"
The hatter from Lewis Carroll's Wonderland is ready to join the tea party. With his tea in hand and his quilt-patterned outfit the hatter is another addition to the Heartwood Creek Wonderland based on Lewis Carroll's book.
In 18th and 19th century England, mercury was used in the production of felt which was used to manufacture hats. Milliners who were exposed daily to these trace amounts of the chemical often developed dementia from mercury poisoning. From this comes the phrase "mad as a hatter" to refer to someone who doesn't quite have it all together!
